DMWS: Welfare Service

Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) is an independent charity providing medical welfare to those who have, and continue to, serve on the frontline and their families/carers. Our welfare staff provide support at the bedside throughout hospital admission and back home. We provide independent and confidential support with issues such as healthcare treatment, general wellbeing, stress and anxiety, mental health, substance misuse, financial worries, housing or homelessness concerns and employment challenges. We also have welfare projects to support the Police and the NHS.

  • We are here to help people:
Have better experiences of healthcare and recover from illness quicker
    Feel less stressed and anxious
Access financial support to reduce the stress of money
Feel less lonely and more connected to their communities
Enjoy positive relationships with families and friends
Find and stay in safe housing
    Overcome alcohol and drug misuse
Access treatment for mental health illnesses such as PTSD
Stop thoughts of taking their own life
Find meaningful employment or volunteering after service
  • Email us or visit our website to learn more about our services.
  • Please note that while many of our services are targeted at the military community and their families and carers, we have welfare projects to support the Police and NHS. If you are a professional and are interested in a programme of welfare support for employees in high trauma roles, please contact info@dmws.org.uk or sbrewster@dmws.org.uk for further support.

Who can use this service?

How are services delivered?

We support all members of the Armed Forces Community across the services, including serving personnel, reservists, veterans, and their family members/carers, whilst they are on a healthcare pathway. This includes The Merchant Navy.

We are based in many NHS hospitals across the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland) plus offer support in the community. We deliver unlimited support. We also have our National Response Service helpline to direct those we support to our physical locations or provide phone-based support. Email us and one of our Welfare Team will be in touch as soon as possible.
